“So what does this mean, Arlise?” Her expression hardening, “What does it mean about you?”

“You think I know?” he answered, disbelievingly, “No future can be predicted nor written.”

“So what is this then?”

“Something someone wrote to scare the life out of you,” his tone changed as he noticed her silence. “It obviously worked.”

Anger flickered through the hard woman. “Let’s play with aura fire, shall we?”

It took less than a second to feel the churning flames of Kan’Ging consume him. Someone else’s fiery aura sent pulses through his muscles and body. It felt like he was being picked apart from the inside. Every ounce of his flesh burning just to stay in preform formation.

“Enough,” the voice came at the same time the burning ended. Perspiration trickled down his chest, exhaustion seized his mind; nose still dripping blood, Arlise looked up panting.

His father had entered.

“Be careful, Liege,” Prudence warned as Dersji strutted closer.

Dersji nodded. He nodded. Arlise wanted to punch him in the face.

“Son, you must cooperate,” he said loudly.

“You piece of Mugadeer—”

“Nah-uh, none of that language here ...” Dersji clicked his fingers and illuminated a think piece of fabric that lay across the back of the chair, spinning it with his aura and forming it over Arlise’s mouth. Twirling his fingers, his twinkling aura tightened the fabric behind Arlise’s head—pulling tight. He could have sworn he heard people laughing.

“My fellow Principal Prudence,” Dersji said amused, “what ever will we do?”

“I don’t know Dersji, what would you suggest?”

“Well if the brute can’t talk, how about we get him to write down his answer?”

“This seems suspicious.”

“Oh?”

“Go on.”

The door opened and Adrel walked in. Arlise widened his eyes.

She undid the chains on his left wrist, and a handed him a pad and pen. She stared at him and mumbled under her breath, “I know why you chose her, and I don’t blame you.”

What was going on? What was she talking about? And what was he going to do with a pen and paper?

“Now Arlise, please write down exactly what you think your job as the Relic means.”

Arlise stared at his father who said nothing. The pain of the shackles and aura didn’t compare to the way Dersji’s hollow gaze ripped Arlise’s heart out. It took him over a minute to look down to the paper, not sure what to write.

Then it took all his strength not to use profanity. With a steady hand, he began writing.

Why?

As soon as he finished writing, something hard connected with his jawbone and his head went rocking sideways. Blood splattered from his nose as he swayed against the pulling aura chains and his muscles spasmed from the blast of black flame around him.

“Don’t ask questions,” Dersji spat in his face. Arlise felt the blood drip down his chin and glanced sidelong at Prudence who was smiling.
